Simple Rose (Art Write-Up)

Title: Simple Rose
Size: 5 x 7 inches
Medium: Acrylic paint of canvas
Finished Date: Finished 2014, gallery wrap 2017
Summary: As the title suggests this was a simple and quick rose. The main purpose of it was to experiment with painting a flower

Write Up:

This is one of my first canvas paintings. I was focused on technique, which is why it is so simple.

It is simple and singular, with only one red rose with a steam and two  small leaves. The beauty is in its simplicity.

As you can see the background is blue and teal. It was created by a crisscross wet blended method. I had only done this technique on larger surface areas and I was pleased with how well it transferred to this smaller area.

The stem’s technique is a gradual shading using a pale green for where the light source hit and a more brown shade of green for the shadowed areas.

For the rose itself I used a crimson base with white for the light and purple for the shade.

For years I would look at this painting and wonder why it did not seem complete. I was at a loss about what was missing and how to improve the art piece. I wanted to keep it simple, but it needed something more. In 2017, I added the gallery wrap. Instead of blue or teal, which would have been in line with what a gallery wrap’s purpose is, I chose red. This small detail makes the painting look and feel complete. It is just enough contrast to give the simple painting another element.

Puzzle Pieces

writing

If we are all puzzle pieces fitting together to make a beautifully detailed picture can you be the one connected next to me. I want to force your gold and silver to connect with my puzzle piece, but I am cardboard. I am just a cardboard piece and you are metal. Perhaps you belong to another picture one perfectly planned for the materials you are made up of.

I do see another puzzle piece off and forgotten. He is not a shiny metal that looks out-of-place. This lone puzzle piece is also cardboard, just like me but his picture is being pulled apart as if life lifted the layers off. I know though, glue and love will mend any bends or pulled picture pieces. This other lone puzzle piece does look to be in the same picture with brilliant bright colors creating a beautiful part. Perhaps this pretty puzzle piece is part of the picture, but he may not be so tightly connected to mine.

My paint is not as bright or beautiful. I do not shine with beauty as the lone puzzle piece, still I will investigate. I will search every configuration. I will try to force the pieces that may not fit together. I will try even if the other piece remains unaware or uninterested in fitting together. I will figure out for myself by gluing down the pulled apart paint with love and glue until I know either way the puzzle is put together.

Forest Painting

I painted a little forest area and recorded myself while doing so. Here is the sped up video, that is available on youtube. I also have two other paintings that I recorded and sped up.

Here is some more information about the video and song that is playing in the back ground.

This a sped up version of me painting a forest, which is where the title “Forest Painting” comes from. It took me a little over an hour to paint this piece and is one of the very few forest paintings I have done.
The song in the background is O.A.R.’s song, “If Only She Knew.”
It is off their 2001 album Risen. You can find more information on O.A.R. on their website.

Painting Islands

Yesterday I spent the afternoon painting and decided to paint a full piece. I painted it from beginning to end all in one sitting, which took about an hour. I also decided to record this process and see what it looks like to paint. I sped it up, put a good song in the background and posted it on youtube.

The song that is playing is Regnia Spektor’s Hotel Song and can be found on her album Begin to Hope, which was released in 2006. For more on Regnia Specktor her website.
